French advertising poster by Eugene Grasset, 1899

“Advertising posters first appeared on the walls of buildings in Europe in second half of the 19th century.  Advances in printing made large scale color posters possible, and a burgeoning middle class with a taste for cafes, for opera and for travel made posters the perfect medium for market development. Discussing the latest posters and the artists who created them was a past time, just as today we might reference the latest super bowl ads at the water cooler.  Naturally, the public wanted to own this new dynamic medium and so poster collecting as a hobby was born.”  Click to enlarge.  For sale at Vintage European Posters in Berkeley, Calif.
