The fungal-fantastical. Emerging from their axial homes, fungi are beginning to be understood as nutrients to the human consciousness and ecological sustainability. Paul Stamets explores mycology and compels support for your own good nature and our fungal allies. This is the first in a collaboration of Louie Schwartzberg of Blacklight Films and Paul Stamets of Fungi Perfecti.
Thanks to an ingenious all-season backyard, our family enjoys an “endless summer.” The Neuwirth-Stein family can’t get enough of the Bay Area outdoors in the Lamorinda area of Orinda. “When we moved to this area, we discovered that families live outdoors as much as possible, so we wanted to create that experience for our family,” says Estee, who–with her husband, Michael, and landscape designer Warren Leiber of Outdoor Living Concepts–packed the yard with options for eating, playing, and lounging. Entertaining is a easy in this versatile and creative space.
Many of their parties flow from the kitchen to the innovative curved deck and the firepit. “I love being able to watch the clouds roll in over the Moraga Valley, smell the air, feel the shifting temperature, and experience the cycle of plants through the seasons,” Estee says. “On cold nights, we’ll circle around the firepit to stay warm, and the string lights create an additional glow that keeps the space warm.”
“We loved working with Warren Leiber of Outdoor Living Concepts,” says Michael, “who helped us create a vibrant outdoor space that meets everyone’s needs. For our son, we have a trampoline that provides endless hours of fun, plus a soccer turf field for additional enjoyment.” The spa area was designed to face the trees and the creek. Around the hot tub, a beautiful wooden deck leads to an outdoor shower.
Estee and Michael worked with Outdoor Living Concepts to turn their narrow back yard into a visually spacious area, with curved shapes that enhance the appeal. They extended two fences to add additional space, and built two curved wood-on-stone benches around the spa and the firepit for additional appeal. They also improved overall drainage (which is important during the rainy months), rebuilt the irrigation, and planted many new shrubs and trees to add botanical diversity.
“It’s fun to connect with nature in a suburban environment. It’s satisfying having a backyard space that encourages us to really be outside as much as possible.”
